The Patriot Wins KPA Awards

The Patriot, the campus newspaper for University of the Cumberlands (UC), brought home 14 awards from the Kentucky Press Association's annual award banquet Friday, Jan. 20.

"It was an honor to see my student staff receive numerous awards from the Kentucky Press Association," said Jeremiah Massengale, a professor at UC and The Patriot's faculty advisor. "It's encouraging for these talented student journalists, and I'm happy they earned some recognition for their many hours of hard work at The Patriot."

The Patriot staff as a whole brought home first place in best front page and best headline, along with a certificate of merit for best social media use. Individual awards also went to the following students:

  • Best Sports Feature Story - First Place: Hunter Cleary and Trenton Canada, both of Williamsburg, Kentucky
  • Best Graphic - First Place, Third Place: Trenton Canada
  • Best Investigative Story or Series - Certificate of Merit: Trenton Canada
  • Best General News Picture - First Place: Brody Nolan of Louisville, Kentucky
  • Best General News Picture - Third Place: Eric Ford Edwards of Brookville, Indiana
  • Best Sports Picture Essay - First Place: Jay Sanksakulchai of Williamsburg, Kentucky
  • Best Sports Picture Essay - Second Place: D.J. Hite of Hillsborough, North Carolina
  • Best General News Story - Second Place: Ashton Rector of Oneida, Tennessee
  • Best General News Story - Third Place: Natasha Jones of Gray, Kentucky

Located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, University of the Cumberlands is an institute of regional distinction that currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major areas of study; 10 pre-professional programs; 10 graduate degrees distributed over eight areas, including two doctorates and seven master's degrees; certificates in education; and online programs.
