UC's Sigma Beta Delta Chapter Inducts Latoshia Davis

2016 Oct 31

The Sigma Beta Delta chapter at University of the Cumberlands (UC) welcomed new members, including Latoshia Davis of Williamsburg, Kentucky, during an induction ceremony on October 25.

"It is a great honor to be selected for this program," said Sze Tan, a junior at UC and a new inductee to the organization. "It will help a lot with resumes in the future and give me good networking opportunities."

Sigma Beta Delta is an honor society for business, management and administration students. To be invited to join the organization, students must be juniors or seniors that have taken at least 15 hours in business and accounting. They must also rank in the top 20% of the department.

After being inducted into Sigma Beta Delta, members are "expected to continue the high performances they have exhibited thus far," said Dr. Michael LaGrone, faculty advisor of UC's Sigma Beta Delta chapter.

There were 14 students and one alumnus inducted into UC's chapter during Tuesday's ceremony.

The inducted students included Jacob Akens, Nathan Braden, Joseph Braun, Latoshia Davis, Katelyn Dunne, Shannon Glendinning, Kathryn Green, Sonia Hammad, Russell Kaeser, Jennifer Philpot, Jessica Severs, Reed Spata, Jovanna Stojanovic and Sze Tan.

Glenn McGuire, the inducted alumnus, served as the ceremony's guest speaker. He graduated from Cumberlands in 1999 and is now the director of accounting at Curae Health, a not-for-profit healthcare group in Knoxville, Tennessee.

UC's chapter of Sigma Beta Delta holds high expectations for the students not only in the classroom, but also in the community. Over the years, the chapter has hosted events intended to benefit the community, such as a financial literacy program and a toy collection for children in need.

"It's good to get out in the community because it gives you an experience of working with people," said Shawn Evans, chapter president and senior accounting major at Cumberlands.

Sigma Beta Delta installed its first chapter in 1994. Since then, it has installed over 395 chapters and over 70,000 members.

Located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, University of the Cumberlands is an institute of regional distinction that currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major areas of study; 10 pre-professional programs; 10 graduate degrees distributed over eight areas, including two doctorates and seven master's degrees; certificates in education; and online programs.
