University of the Cumberlands

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Softball season came to a close at the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament. Although UC wasn't able to make a postseason run towards a NAIA National Championship, numerous Patriots continued to receive honors. On Wednesday, one UC graduate received yet another achievement as this one comes as the highest academic award given by the NAIA.

University of the Cumberlands (UC) is pleased to announce that 93 students have been named Christian Leadership Scholar honorees for the 2015-2016 school year. The amount of scholarships awarded totals approximately $208,000 in scholarships in their first year or $832,000 over four years. The amount of the scholarship varies for each student based on the extent of active leadership involvement.

Luke Atkeson (Galena, Ohio) received several awards and honors at University of the Cumberlands' (UC) 56th annual Honors Day program. Most notably, he was named the 2015 recipient of the Dr. Edward L. Hutton School of Business Administration Award for his academic achievement and particular merit.

Shannon Whittenberg (Louisville, Kentucky) received the Emma McPherson English Department award and other honors at University of the Cumberlands' (UC) 56th annual Honors Day program.

UC's Danielle Hoop (Owenton, KY) and teammate Courtney Rhodes (Riceboro, GA) are the MSC Women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday. This is the 2nd weekly award for Hoop this season while Rhodes is earning her 1st.

On Monday, March 30th, University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Hagan Memorial Library held its third annual International Edible Books Festival Contest. The festival gave UC students, faculty, and staff, as well as the community, the opportunity to show off their creative talents by baking cakes based on their favorite books.

University of the Cumberlands is excited to welcome our new students for the spring 2015 semester. The incoming students represent an accomplished, diverse group of individuals who hail from all around the United States and represent countries around the world. This class continues to grow daily showing that it's never too late to be a Patriot!

Most University of the Cumberlands' (UC) students were busy counting their days until Thanksgiving break for the duration of November; however, sophomore Kim Skiles (McKinney, Texas) spent her month writing a novel. The National Novel Writing Month challenges participants to write at least 50,000 words in a month. This is the second time Skiles participated and succeeded in the challenge.

Over the course of this summer one University of the Cumberlands (UC) student, Lydia Huggins (Erwin, TN), spent over two months serving as a missionary doing media relations work for Face2Face.

University of the Cumberlands' (UC) student Jillian Carpenter's senior colloquium was the play, "The Choice" which was presented at the Kohn Theatre located on UC's campus on Sept. 19, 2014.

Gine Nichols (Horse Cave, Ky.), University of the Cumberlands' (UC) student and member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Corbin, Ky., spent a week in Nairobi, Kenya ministering to children and young women in the slums this past summer.

When doctors insisted that University of the Cumberlands' (UC) upcoming freshman Samantha Lay's enlarged lymph node was nothing to be alarmed about, Lay's mother opted for a second opinion. Without her mother's instinct, Lay's story would have a much different ending. Lay's fight for her life while struggling with cancer brought her closer to God and has made her a living example of His glory and grace.

Two University of the Cumberlands' (UC) students were inducted into the Upsilon-Upsilon Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta on December 3, 2014. The ceremony was conducted by Dr. Eric L. Wake, chapter advisor. The two students were: Hope Coleman (Georgetown, KY) and Mitchell Kithcart (PeeWee Valley, KY).

University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Kappa Delta Pi is the International Honor Society in Education. The induction ceremony was recently held at the Cumberland Inn where 19 new members were inducted. The Education Club and Alexandria Deaton, undergraduate Education professor, led the ceremony along with a guest speaker Dr. Jason Creekmore, UC graduate Education professor.

University of the Cumberlands (UC) takes great pride in the many different honor societies that can be found on campus. Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) is a specialized honor society in Mathematics that acknowledges success to undergraduate students in the field.

University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Human Services Department's honor society, Tau Epsilon Alpha, recently conducted a canned food drive. They collected and donated 610 cans to Cedar Ridge Ministries.
