First research trip abroad for UC's biology department
The biology department's first abroad research trip was led by Dr. Sara Ash, Professor of Biology at University of the Cumberlands (UC) and UC student Cory Clark (Seymour, TN), senior biology major. The two went to work in Belize at the Belize Foundation for Environmental Research (BFREE) during winter break.

Cumberlands announces Fall 2014 President's List
In recognition of their academic performance, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs has announced the students that have been named to the President's List for the 2014 fall semester. To be eligible, students must have achieved a grade of "A" in convocation while maintaining a minimum cumulative scholastic standing of 4.00.

UC Student Composes a Novel in a Month
Most University of the Cumberlands' (UC) students were busy counting their days until Thanksgiving break for the duration of November; however, sophomore Kim Skiles (McKinney, Texas) spent her month writing a novel. The National Novel Writing Month challenges participants to write at least 50,000 words in a month. This is the second time Skiles participated and succeeded in the challenge.

UC Presents 47th Annual Madrigal Dinners
University of the Cumberlands (UC) has always impressed with its holiday spirit, lights, and elegance during the Christmas season and its magical musical performances are no exception. UC held its 47th Annual Madrigal Dinners beginning December 4th in the T.J. Roberts Dining Hall on UC's campus and continued production through December 6th. The Madrigal Singers, UC's Chamber Choir, were led under the direction of Dr. Smoak and accompanied on piano by Kay Dawn McFarland.

Schlatter Named to Academic All-American Volleyball List
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Volleyball Patriots are coming off a very successful 2014 season. The Patriots won over 20 games, the first time since 2008. UC also won their first Mid-South Conference (MSC) Quarterfinal game in program history. One player has been vital to their success not only on the court, but also off.

Patriot Soccer Duo Dubbed NAIA Scholar Athletes
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Soccer team rounded out their first season under Head Coach Tim Brooks with an overall record of 4-12-1. With numerous close games, the Patriots know that hard work will pay off in the future. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced on Friday that two UC Men's Soccer student-athletes have been named 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, showcasing their hard work also in the classroom.

Lewis Captures MSC Offensive Player of the Week Honors
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program wrapped up its 2014 season on Saturday with a big win over Bluefield College 63-28. The Patriots finished the season 3-7 and 2-4 in Mid-South Conference play. Numerous Patriots had standout performances in the win, but one went above and beyond with his play and for his efforts was recognized by the MSC today.

Samantha Lay--a Fighter and Survivor
When doctors insisted that University of the Cumberlands' (UC) upcoming freshman Samantha Lay's enlarged lymph node was nothing to be alarmed about, Lay's mother opted for a second opinion. Without her mother's instinct, Lay's story would have a much different ending. Lay's fight for her life while struggling with cancer brought her closer to God and has made her a living example of His glory and grace.

University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Kappa Delta Pi is the International Honor Society in Education. The induction ceremony was recently held at the Cumberland Inn where 19 new members were inducted. The Education Club and Alexandria Deaton, undergraduate Education professor, led the ceremony along with a guest speaker Dr. Jason Creekmore, UC graduate Education professor.

Two Patriots Earn MSC All-Conference Honors
Sophomore defenders Jack Cousin (Alva, Scotland) and Jack Hutton (Preston, United Kingdom) were both named 2nd team All-Conference for the Mid-South Conference. Both Cousin and Hutton were key parts to a solid Patriot defensive line in the 2014 season that averaged giving up just over 2 goals per contest.

Phi Alpha Theta Program Features UC Students and Internship
University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Phi Alpha Theta society hosted their first installment of their lecture series Tuesday, September 24, 2014. The topic of discussion was "Narratives of Working with Government Internships." The three students who led the discussion were Rhyana Barker, Kimberly Farr, and Cody King. Matthew Kelley, a senior Phi Alpha Theta member, facilitated the discussion.

UC's Appalachian Ministries hosts VBS at Corbin Manor
University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Appalachian Ministries (AM) team visited the Corbin Manor Apartments July 14th through the 18th and held Vacation Bible School (VBS) on the complex's property in Corbin. There were nearly 25 kids from the apartments in attendance.

UC's Tanner Williams leads BCM Worship
Williams took a common worship theme, freedom, and made it his own during his discourse. He said what freedom is to a regular person is defined differently from what God's definition of freedom is. He said Jesus allows a person to be set free by Him, but only because that person belongs to Him, in which Williams called a paradox.
